What is paper honeycomb and where is it used?

Paper honeycomb is a core material made by bonding kraft paper with a special technique; when expanded it forms hexagonal cells resembling a honeycomb. It is used to fill the space between two facings in door and furniture panels.

The product is shipped as unexpanded blocks and is expanded at the point of use before being placed inside the panel or door frame.

Cell size vs core thickness

DimensionWhat it describesMOS options
Cell sizeThe width of one hexagonal cell when the core is expanded16, 24, 28, 32 mm (32A / 32B)
Core thicknessThe height of the core; it corresponds to the gap between the two facings10–49 mm, made to order

Stating both dimensions separately in your enquiry avoids selecting the wrong product.

Product selection guide

The right core is defined by the whole application, not by a single dimension. Consider the following together:

  • Application: interior door, furniture or panel, and the conditions of use.
  • Facing material: the type and thickness of the board or skin.
  • Adhesive and pressing: the method and conditions on your production line.
  • Cell size: in general, a smaller cell gives more support points under the facing per unit area; a larger cell uses less paper over the same area.
  • Core thickness: defined by the inner cavity of the door or panel.

We recommend validating the right balance for your application with samples and production trials.

Storage and handling

  • Store products in a dry, covered area away from moisture.
  • Keep boxes and pallets off the floor, on pallets.
  • Do not place heavy loads on top of boxes to avoid crushing.
  • Keep unexpanded blocks in their packaging until they are ready for use.

Confirm storage and handling recommendations for your product with our team when ordering.
